Why Setting Boundaries is Trending (and Why It Matters)
Have you noticed lately how this is all you see on social media? There is so much talk about setting healthy boundaries to deal with family, friends, and toxic exes. More so than ever before, and I think it’s because people are tired of putting up with other people’s issues.
So, what exactly are our boundaries?
Boundaries are lines that we create to maintain a healthy space between ourselves and others, whether it be emotionally, physically, or mentally.
I envision my boundaries much like I envision my white light protection bubble while I meditate. Let me explain when I am in meditation, I always envision this beautiful bubble of white and gold light, sometimes it also has pink glitter… anyway, while I meditate, I am inside that bubble and only positive energy of the highest vibration is allowed to enter. No negativity can penetrate my bubble. So, imagine your boundaries are your bubble. Each layer of protection outside that bubble represents all the lines you have drawn in how you interact with people or how you wish they interacted with you. Only the people and circumstances that adhere to your boundaries are allowed in your bubble.
Beyond “No”: How Setting Boundaries Can Transform Your Life in Four Key Ways
Why are boundaries important?
Having healthy boundaries can help with the following:
- Reduce stress and resentment: Imagine this like a balloon; for every yes we say that should be a no either because you can’t or do not want to do that “favor”—the stress inflates the balloon until it finally explodes. Once it does, your resentment for that person or situation will spill out. You will either feel burned out or have a full-blown meltdown. Setting strong boundaries and what you are willing to put your energy into can help prevent the balloon from popping.
- Improved self-esteem and confidence: Setting boundaries is a powerful form of self-respect, signaling that your needs are important. This act boosts self-esteem by aligning your choices with your values and asserting control over your life. While saying “no” may feel uncomfortable at first, it strengthens confidence by demonstrating your ability to prioritize your well-being over pleasing others. This reduces pressure and guilt, fostering a sense of freedom and self-assurance.
- Stronger, healthier relationships: Setting boundaries is basically like saying, “Hey, let’s be clear about what works for both of us.” It keeps things open and honest, so we avoid those annoying misunderstandings and respect each other more. Plus, it makes us feel safe enough to really connect on a deeper level. It’s like saying “no” sometimes actually helps us both give and take more fairly, showing we truly care about each other. And you know what? It also gives us our own space to grow and do our thing, while still supporting each other through thick and thin. It’s all about making our relationship stronger and more supportive, one boundary at a time.
- Increased sense of personal control: Setting boundaries is like grabbing the steering wheel of your life. It means saying “no” to what drains you and “yes” to what matters most—your passions, loved ones, and goals—giving your days structure and intention. This choice empowers you, reducing decision fatigue and protecting your vibe from negativity, which boosts your focus and mental clarity. Plus, it builds a sense of self-reliance and confidence, as you realize you’re in control, setting the pace of your life. It’s all about feeling empowered to craft a more fulfilling life experience.

You’re Not Alone: How to Start Setting Boundaries & Reclaim Your Life
We are not alone in having some, if not all, of these feelings; that is why you hear more and more people talk about boundaries and how setting them has changed lives.
Here are a few things I did when setting my boundaries. First, I got very clear on what I wanted my boundaries to be. This took time for me to reflect on what are the things I want to do, what’s important for ME, and what drains my energy.
I communicated my boundaries clearly and without apology to those around me. And then, I simply started to say NO. I did not follow the NO up with a reason or an apology because, for me, NO is a full sentence. Like Warren Buffet once said, “The difference between successful people and really successful people is that really successful people say ‘No’ to almost everything.”
I will tell say this, people will be upset. They will not understand this “sudden” change; truth is, it wasn’t sudden, it was a long time coming. And that is fine; let them be upset. You know who will not be upset? YOU. They will make you out to be selfish, and that’s okay too. Their feelings are not your concern. Your concern should be your peace and your happiness.
If you are dealing with pushback and resistance, my advice is to stay calm and firm and, most importantly, be prepared to walk away from unhealthy relationships. Take it from me, it is liberating!
